Oklahoma State University's music industry program at the Michael and Anne Greenwood School of Music has been named one of the nation's top music business schools by Billboard magazine for the third year in a row.
The music industry program has received more attention because of Billboard's recognition and attracts talented students from across the country. Billboard recognizes schools that excel in areas like music production and live entertainment, giving students real-life experiences that prepare them for a constantly evolving industry.
"That's one of the best things and one of the most frustrating things," joked Dr. Mark Perry, director of music industry and associate professor. "I teach an introductory music business course every year, and I've never taught that class the same way. Because even while I'm teaching the class, things are changing in the music industry."
With the assistance of the GSM and CAS staff and leadership, Perry established the music industry program at the Greenwood School of Music in 2017, and it has become the fastest-growing program within the school. Much of its success is due to the program's exceptional leadership and continuous recognition.
When it began, most students originated from Oklahoma or Texas, but in the last few years, the program has seen an increase in students from neighboring states and the coasts.
"I think one of the strongest things about our program compared to other programs is we don't have a single concentration, instead preparing students for an ever-changing industry," Perry said.
Throughout the program, Perry has accumulated a strong team of music industry insiders, sharing their talents and skills with students. Artists like Zac Maloy, an award-winning songwriter, and Luke Tallon and Trent Bell, successful music producers, have shown aspiring musicians the many facets of the music industry.
"My band and songs I've written have been mentioned in Billboard Magazine going back nearly 30 years," Maloy said. "I never thought I'd be mentioned as a teacher in the OSU music program, as that very program has been named for three years straight as one of the best in the country."
The Greenwood School of Music offers students training in state-of-the-art facilities, including recording studios and performance spaces. The generosity of Michael and Anne Greenwood, Betsy Kootnz and Dick and Melinda Berry Fischer allows students to practice what they are learning and find their passions.
Perry and the department are already planning future initiatives to further strengthen its program and solidify its place as a leader in music business education.
"I have big plans, and I want my students to have as many opportunities as they can," Perry said. "With the growth, there needs to be support, and the donations we have received have been extraordinary and have been life-changing for my students."
Students gravitate toward the broad range of skills and areas the music industry offers. Writing as well as recording their songs on Spotify, participating in Battle of the Bandsat the end of each semester and working with resident rock bands like Other Lives, the program gives students a place to express themselves.
Perry is excited about the future of the music industry program at OSU and is constantly finding new ways to broaden and expand the limits. The Billboard recognition not only elevates the music industry program but also enhances OSU's standing among top-tier institutions, preparing students for the next generation.
