Remote Video Remarks: Brad Crabtree at U.S.-Japan Annual CCUS Working Group Meeting in Tomakomai, Japan

  • Thank you for attending today's Working Group meeting.
  • I am sorry that I cannot join you in person today, but I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Director General Wakuda, Director Yaguchi and our other Japanese colleagues at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. I am grateful for your engagement and continued participation with the Department of Energy over the past several years.
  • For the United States, our partnership with Japan is among our most important bilateral relationships in the world. In that context, my colleagues and I in the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management at the U.S. Department of Energy see our collaboration with METI and other Japanese stakeholders as one of our key bilateral partnerships to advance carbon management globally.
  • In addition to this bilateral CCUS Working Group, we appreciate the opportunity to partner with Japan in the CEM CCUS Initiative, the Mission Innovation CDR mission, the Carbon Management Challenge, and the Asia CCUS Network.
  • Your support for carbon management technologies is recognized around the world. And we welcome your commitment and your leadership in these efforts.
  • Our two agencies' collaboration on carbon management has been tremendous. And our engagements just over the past year have been valuable and productive.
  • Leaders from both agencies met at a bilateral in Pittsburgh last year, and I want to thank the METI team for sending a strong delegation to engage with us there.
  • METI hosted me in Tokyo during my visit to Japan this March, where I met with former Director General Sadamitsu.
  • As a result of expressions of interest from METI officials and Japanese industry during that visit that we undertake a study of the feasibility of potentially shipping CO2 from Japan to Alaska for geologic storage, I directed my team to fund and initiate that work immediately. I very much appreciate the input from METI staff and Japanese industry representatives into that study, an early draft of which is already completed.
  • During this meeting today, our teams will be talking about additional cooperation regarding:
  • The commercialization of carbon management, with a particular focus on the Alaska CO2 shipping study.
  • Cooperation on carbon dioxide removal procurement and measurement, reporting and verification standards
  • Developing technology to enable transboundary shipments of CO2, and
  • The coordination of joint efforts through our participation in the Carbon Management Challenge
  • For our part, I hope and expect that the discussions today will build on our previous engagements and will advance our collaboration on these efforts
  • It an honor for us to partner with you. Together, our two agencies, and two countries are developing the technologies and methods needed to meet our shared climate obligations.
  • Thank you again for everyone's participation.
