Accurso’s journey from first-gen student to dean

A proud Bearcat, she earned bachelor's degrees in medical technology and biology and a PhD in pathobiology and molecular medicine, all from UC.

In addition to being the dean, she's served as interim dean, associate dean of academic affairs, professor of medical laboratory, associate dean of academic affairs and professor of medical laboratory science. She's helped to create new programs, mentored faculty and staff, been recognized for her leadership and serves as an accreditation volunteer.

In addition to recognition for her research in targeted cancer therapies, Accurso has spearheaded strategic initiatives for college growth, helped to launch the CAHS Interdisciplinary Community Clinic and led diversity, equity and inclusion programs that enrich the community at UC.

Of her many accolades, she takes particular pride in being a first-generation college student. This experience was not only a significant challenge but also a vital catalyst that shaped her achievements and fueled her drive to succeed. Her journey to becoming dean reflects resilience and determination and illustrates the values she brings to her leadership role.

Growing up in Cincinnati, Accurso was a part of UC's community well before she became a Bearcat. Her mother's role as an administrative assistant at UC introduced her to the campus at an early age, where she attended music lessons at the College-Conservatory of Music, summer camps at the recreation center and played football games on UC's fields. This exposure fostered a deep sense of belonging, making UC an obvious choice for her higher education.

Entering college brought new challenges. Her first lecture in the large Zimmer Hall contrasted sharply with her previous experiences. More independence was required for her college courses, which demanded she develop strong organization, time management and study skills. Navigating these academic demands as a first-generation student set her on a path of personal growth that has been integral to her career in higher education.

Today, as dean, Accurso is committed to giving back to the very educational environment that empowered her. She leads with empathy and understanding, creating a college culture that prioritizes mentorship, inclusivity and student support - values that were integral to her success as a student and continue to define her as a leader.

Her path has given her a profound empathy for students facing similar challenges.

Overcoming self-doubt and navigating complex academic material shaped her into a leader who understands the value of perseverance. She encourages students to seek guidance and cultivate resilience along their journeys.

Throughout her career, she has faced moments of doubt but met these challenges with a commitment to self-improvement. Overcoming these challenges shaped her into a leader who understands the value of personal growth and who emphasizes lifelong learning. Holding that, she understands that success is tied to continually seeking knowledge and support.

Her dedication to lifelong learning is something she actively promotes. As she often reminds her students, "Every day is a new day to move forward. Seek guidance from faculty, friends or mentors. While the journey may be challenging, dedication and heart can lead you to achieve your goals."
