AUBURN - Caltrans is alerting motorists that construction has paused on the $12.3 million American Canyon Roundabout Project in Auburn, at the intersection of State Route 49 (SR-49) and Lincoln Way/Borland Avenue, because of permit issues within Union Pacific Railroad right of way.
The delay comes after a second long-term closure of Borland Avenue where work was performed to construct portions of the roundabout. During that time, crews continued working with the intention to finish the roadway along Borland Avenue after obtaining permits necessary to complete the work.
These permits are necessary to complete the utility work before the remainder of the project moves forward. The duration of the delay is unknown, but construction is anticipated to resume by late fall.
So far, crews have constructed the embankment for the new highway alignment along with the installation of new culverts and inlets. Sidewalk improvements have started at the southwest and northwest corners of the intersection.
This project is the second of three recent projects in the Auburn area to improve safety on the SR-49 corridor in Placer County. Lamon Construction Co., Inc. of Yuba City is the prime contractor for the project, which will realign two reversing curves to improve sight distance and safety by reducing the sharpness of each curve. Additionally, the existing traffic signal at the Lincoln Way/Borland Avenue intersection will be replaced with a roundabout to improve safety and traffic flow. Completion of the project is expected in spring 2025.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to "Be Work Zone Alert" and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.
The department will issue construction updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic, click on Caltrans' QuickMap or download the QuickMap app from the App Store or Google Play.
