Huntsville Animal Services provides tips to alleviate fireworks-related pet anxiety

Published on July 3, 2024

While Independence Day sparks joy and celebration for many, booms and pops in the sky and on the ground can often stress pets.

"Fireworks can cause significant anxiety for animals," said Virgie Graham, Interim Director of Huntsville Animal Services. "The loud noises and unexpected flashes of light can disrupt their sense of safety and security."

To help pet owners keep their furry friends calm during fireworks, Graham offers the following tips:

  • Create a safe space.
  • Use white noise.
  • Comfort your pet.
  • Provide distractions.

Consult your veterinarian for additional tips.

If you anticipate having a quiet home during the July Fourth holiday, consider adopting or fostering a shelter pet. These animals, already vulnerable, are especially prone to feeling disoriented and scared due to fireworks and being in an unfamiliar environment.
