Guidehouse Releases 2024 State and Future of the Power Industry Report

In June 2024, Guidehouse and Public Utilities Fortnightly released the 9th State and Future of the Power IndustryReport, which identifies key changes in the utility industry as companies continue to navigate aging infrastructure; ongoing supply chain bottlenecks; increasing storm intensity; and new environmental, social, and corporate governance mandates.

The report finds that resilience is one of the most pressing concerns for utility leaders. In a survey of over 400 executives and influencers across the U.S. and Canadian utility industry, a third of respondents point to climate change and destructive climate-related disasters as the most disruptive existential threat to the power industry today, while slightly more (40%) cited aging infrastructure and an overall decline in the quality of life as the most pressing concerns. Other key findings in the report include the need for integrating more flexible generation and digitalization into the system to improve resilience and the importance of state and local governments as partners in navigating the energy transition.
