JCPS, LG&E celebrate district’s “A-plus” investments in energy efficiency
District marks more than $1 million in utility rebates for 500 investment projects since 2011
(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) - The partnership between Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky's largest school district, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), means year-round planning and collaboration, from meeting the district's around-the-clock electric and natural gas needs at 170 schools and campus buildings to supporting individual schools during inclement weather and major construction and renovation projects.
This year, JCPS completed major investment projects at eight of its schools, leading to improved lighting, reductions in operating costs, lower overall energy usage and a more comfortable learning environment for students. They're the latest in a list of 500 projects the district has completed in 50 buildings since 2011, and during that time, JCPS partnered with LG&E to take advantage of the utility's Business Rebates program, which is designed to help customers offset costs for qualifying projects that lead to energy savings.
On Aug. 26, LG&E officials presented JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio and other JCPS officials with a business rebate of more than $127,000 for improvements made in 2024 - marking more than $1 million in rebates earned by the district since 2011.
"Supporting our customers' energy goals and investing in education initiatives in the communities we serve go hand-in-hand with who we are as a company, and it's uplifting to see these efforts come together in this way through our Business Rebates program," said Shannon Montgomery, vice president of Customer Services for LG&E and sister utility Kentucky Utilities Company.
"We're extremely proud of the work we've done to save energy, save money and help save the environment," said Dr. Marty Pollio, JCPS superintendent. "LG&E has been our partner every step of the way as we've installed more energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems in our schools, improving the learning environment and setting an example for students and taxpayers in the process."
LG&E and KU first launched energy efficiency programs for customers in the late 1990s, and just last year, began rolling out the largest suite of programs in the company's history. The programs range from incentivizing energy-saving improvements; offsetting costs for new, smart technologies; making repairs and upgrades for income-qualified homeowners and renters; to helping the utilities reduce overall energy demand at peak times of day.
