NADLER PRAISES $60 MILLION AUTHORIZATION TO UPGRADE MANHATTAN'S ENVIRONMENTAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-12) praised the House passage of H.R. 8812,the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024, which includes his request to authorize $60 million for the Army Corps of Engineers to work with the City of New York to upgrade Manhattan's environmental infrastructure. This funding will facilitate projects to help improve water and wastewater infrastructure, storm water management and combined sewer overflows.

"Rising sea-levels, combined with a record frequency of "once-in-a-generation" storms have highlighted Manhattan's vulnerability to the impacts of the climate crisis," said Congressman Nadler. "As a waterfront community, it is critical we make the investments necessary to protect Manhattan from rising waters, which is why I was proud to secure today's $60 million authorization in WRDA to allow the Army Corps of Engineers to work with the City of New York to upgrade Manhattan's environmental infrastructure. Together, we can protect our communities and fight back against the climate crisis."

The Water Resources Development Act gives the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers authority to carry out water development projects and studies, among other things. Allowing the Army Corps of Engineers to spend the money is the first step in the process. If signed into law, Congress would still need to provide funding for the Corps to carry out the environmental infrastructure projects in Manhattan.
