BPA-Free Lining

Given the dynamic changes in regulations regarding Bisphenol A (BPA) in Food Contact Materials (FCMs) across Europe, we are dedicated to keeping you updated on the latest developments and necessary actions. The European Commission proposed a near complete ban on BPA in FCMs in the spring of 2024, followed by a transition period lasting until the end of 2025.

In anticipation of these regulatory changes, Tri-Sure has proactively adapted by ensuring our products comply with the forthcoming standards. We have redeveloped and tested our RDL® 100 lining to align with the strict requirements set by both the FDA (USA) and the European Union. This updated product will be introduced as RDL® 100FA.

Challenges and Proposed Solutions:

The proposed EU ban on BPA and potential global regulations present significant challenges for steel drum manufacturers, particularly in developing BPA-free coatings that match the durability, corrosion resistance, and food safety of existing options. This ensures the continued integrity and safety of steel drums. Manufacturers also need to navigate diverse global regulations and secure EU-compliant raw materials, which involves extensive testing of BPA-NIAS materials to meet stringent EU standards. Transitioning to BPA-free coatings could increase costs due to the need for additional documentation, certifications, and possibly more expensive alternative materials, impacting market competitiveness.

To effectively address these challenges, the industry should explore alternative materials like non-BPA-based resins and polymers, ensuring they meet or exceed performance and regulatory standards through thorough testing and validation. Building strong supplier relationships and maintaining clear communication with customers about regulatory changes and cost implications is essential. This transparency supports our commitment to meeting strict global regulations and continuously developing products that fulfill or exceed customer expectations. Additionally, ongoing investment in research and development is crucial for adapting to regulatory changes and evolving market demands, enabling a smooth transition to compliant and safe steel drum coatings.

Our Coatings Solutions

At Tri-Sure, we lead the shift towards BPA-NIAS (Non-Intentionally Added Substances) coatings with our RDL®100FA and RDL®101FA linings. These products, designed without intentionally added Bisphenol A, offer high chemical resistance and protect contents effectively. They comply with global food contact standards such as the FDA, EC 1935/2004, Mercosur, and Chinese regulations, catering to diverse markets.

Phasing out BPA is crucial for health safety and spurs innovation. Our BPA-NIAS coatings provide a dependable solution for the steel drum industry, helping navigate BPA-free regulations and ensuring the continued supply of safe, high-quality coatings.
