Bold vision for recreational fishing research

The RecFishing Research, Development and Extension (RD&E) Plan 2024-29 lays out a strategic framework to address the pressing research needs of Australia's recreational fishing sector.

This initiative aims to align with the national goals set by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and tackle the significant challenges facing the recreational fishing sector.

Its vision is bold as it is important: 'Kids able to fish safely, accessibly, close to home and successfully!'

Why a Strategic Plan is Essential

Recreational fishing is not only a beloved pastime for over four million Australians but also is a significant draw for international tourists. Australia boasts some of the world's highest-quality recreational fisheries, thanks to its pristine environments, diverse species and robust supporting infrastructure. To maintain its status, it is crucial to protect fish stocks and ensure sustainable access to recreational fisheries.

However, the sector faces various ecological, social and economic challenges. Given its diverse community, understanding the differing motivations and aspirations within this group is essential for targeted research and development.

Program Coordinator for Recfishing Research, Danny Simpson, says the strategy articulates the long-term goal for the sector, mapping the critical pathways to achieving it.

"Through ARFF's membership, which includes peak state/territory recreational fishing bodies and national recreational fishing organisations, we identified those areas of research which have the greatest impact on achieving the long-term goal," Danny says.

Areas of Impact for a Sustainable Future

The RecFishing Research Strategy identifies six Areas of Impact aimed at realising a sustainable vision for Australia's recreational fishing sector:

1. Resilient fish stocks: Encourage the adoption of best practice and build resilience in recreational fisheries.

1. Effective representation: Ensure strong political recognition and representation for the recreational sector through effective governance.

1. Secure fisheries access: Develop new management frameworks and foster partnerships for co-management across the fishing sector.

1. Social licence: Emphasising responsible resource management, recreational fishers are recognised as trusted custodians of our fisheries resources and their environments.

1. Consistent funding and investment as well as human capacity: Foster leadership among current and future fishers to ensure sustainable practices.

1. Great fishing experiences: Partner with government and organisations to enhance facilities and access for diverse fishing experiences.

Monitoring and Evaluation

To ensure the effectiveness of the RD&E Plan, RecFishing Research will conduct annual reviews.

"The plan is a 'living' strategy that will be regularly updated to meet the changing needs of recreational fishers," Danny says.

The RecFishing RD&E Plan 2024-29 represents a proactive approach to securing a sustainable future for recreational fishing in Australia, addressing the needs of a diverse community while safeguarding valuable aquatic resources.
