NV Energy Implements Emergency De-Energization Measures

Emergency de-energization implemented to enhance safety of communities and first responders as wildfire risk grows across the west

NV Energy has implemented an additional safeguard to their wildfire safety measures. When an active wildfire moves too close to NV Energy equipment, an emergency de-energization of the power lines will take place. This process allows NV Energy to make the most effective decisions, avoid additional fire risk and protect first responders.

As wildfires and extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, the implementation of emergency de-energization has become an industry best practice to protect customers and communities from additional wildfire risks. NV Energy is committed to the safety of its customers and first responders, and emergency de-energization allows us to honor that commitment.

Customers will experience more frequent outages from emergency de-energizations related to wildfires. These outages will vary in duration based on the size, direction and location of the wildfire in question. Due to the rapid response for an emergency de-energization, it may not be possible to send an advance notification to customers.

When an emergency de-energization occurs, NV Energy's online outage maps will be updated, and customers will receive outage notifications based on their communication preferences. NV Energy will provide updates on the emergency de-energization and potential restoration times.

Restoration times will depend on conditions on the ground, such as containment of the wildfire, speed and direction of the wildfire, potential damage to power lines and equipment, and accessibility.

A multi-point checklist is utilized to determine whether it is safe to restore power or determine the need to delay restoration to allow first responders to safely respond to wildfire conditions. NV Energy will work to restore power to all customers as quickly as possible, but this may need to be done in phases.
