Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Applauds $25.359 Million Grant to Strengthen Port of Houston's Export Capacity and Flood Resilience

Washington, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (D-TX-29) proudly announced a $25,359,216 federal grant awarded to the Port of Houston through the Biden-Harris Administration's Port Infrastructure Development Program.

Earlier this year, Congresswoman Garcia called for funding to expand the port's grain export capacity and improve flood resilience. Today's award, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, reflects her commitment to bolstering Houston's economic infrastructure and safeguarding surrounding communities from severe weather impacts.

"I am thrilled to see more than $25 million in federal funds coming to the Port of Houston, which is a cornerstone of our economy and a critical gateway for Texas farmers and businesses," said Congresswoman Garcia. "This grant, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law I proudly supported, will drive much-needed infrastructure improvements that boost export capacity, reduce emissions, and create good-paying jobs right here in the Houston region. This is a significant investment in the safety, sustainability, and strength of Houston and surrounding communities."

"America's ports are essential to our nation's supply chains, and thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration, we have projects underway all across the country-from Long Beach to Milwaukee to Monroe-that are making it possible for our ports to move more goods each year and keep costs down for families," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. "With the investments we're announcing today, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we're building on this good work and funding more projects that will expand capacity, improve efficiency, and facilitate the quicker movement of goods at ports in more than a dozen states."

The Agricultural Export Improvement and Community Resilience Project will modernize the grain elevator at the port's Turning Basin Terminal, significantly increasing throughput capacity while reducing emissions by cutting back on truck traffic within the facility. The project also includes the first phase of a comprehensive stormwater drainage improvement system, addressing longstanding flood concerns for nearby neighborhoods.

The project is part of a nearly $580 million investment by the U.S. Department of Transportation to strengthen U.S. supply chains, with funding distributed across 31 port projects nationwide. Congresswoman Garcia remains committed to ensuring the Houston region receives the federal resources it needs to remain a thriving and resilient hub for trade and commerce.
