Steve Becroft of Salem Announced as Winner of Gomes Service Award

SALEM, MA - Steve Becroft of Salem is the winner of the 2024 Peter J. Gomes Service Award. Congressman Seth Moulton presented the award at a ceremony in Peabody last night.

Becroft volunteers with Healing Abuse Working for Change (HAWC) to ensure support and access to justice for victims of domestic violence. He regularly takes shifts on HAWC's emergency hotline and volunteers 2-3 times a week in multiple courts to help survivors apply for abuse prevention orders. Steve also engages in safety planning with survivors so they can make informed decisions about their safety and wellbeing, and he conducts outreach calls after they obtain prevention orders to provide continued support and resources.

Four honorees were also recognized for their exemplary integrity, compassion, and commitment to community - attributes that were embodied by the Congressman's late mentor, Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes.

"What an incredible group of honorees we had this year. Selecting one person for this award was an incredibly difficult decision to make because each honoree demonstrates a truly inspiring commitment to service," said Congressman Moulton. "I was particularly touched by Steve Becroft's dedication to helping victims of domestic violence. It takes a special person to navigate a challenge as heartbreaking and sensitive as domestic abuse - and I think it's safe to say that Steve's work with HAWC has saved many lives."
