Hatch wins the OPWA Public Works Project of the Year Award for the Eramosa River Bridge replacement project

Mississauga, ON, July 5, 2024 - Hatch is privileged to receive the Public Works Project of the Year Award from the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) in the category of Historical Restoration/Preservation. The award recognizes collaborative excellence in the management and administration of public works projects.

Hatch, retained as the prime consultant, worked with Metrolinx, Archaeological Research Associates (ARA), and Soncin Construction to provide project management and multidisciplinary design services to improve construction efficiency for the Eramosa River Bridge replacement project.

The bridge, erected in 1912, is maintained and operated by Metrolinx. The historic landmark, which is listed on the municipal heritage registry, needed to be replaced with minimal disruption to the commuter train service along the mile point 41.05 of the Guelph Subdivision rail corridors.

Safety was given the highest priority, with thorough planning and execution resulting in no lost-time injuries over 24 months, setting up a new standard for public works projects, emphasizing collaboration and safety.

The meticulous masonry substructure rehabilitation and replacement transformed this iconic relic into a functional span while reinforcing a vital link between Kitchener and Georgetown. The project also addressed the practical needs of transit growth essential to the community of Guelph by considering the increasing demand for public transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Additionally, the project enhanced connectivity by broadening access to regional services.

A proactive approach facilitated holistic safety, including environmental measures such as advanced analysis of rail structures behavior, a site-specific safety management plan, and rigorous inspections during each work block for track reinstatement, testing, and commissioning.

"The Eramosa River Bridge project exemplifies excellence by fostering collaboration, prioritizing safety, and bridging the past and present. We established a new benchmark for public works projects, highlighting the important role of all the stakeholders in creating our communities' future," shares Terry Kelly, project manager.

Hatch and its partners proudly received the OPWA Public Works Project of the Year Award for Structures, Transportation and Historical Restoration/Preservation during the OPWA Luncheon Gala on May 29.
