Inside the Core, We Look Forward to a Panel on Immigration

Susan Reynolds, assistant professor of Catholic Studies, Emory University.

Inside the Core, this week we are looking forward to an important panel discussion at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 24, 2024 on "Immigration: Moral & Theological Experiences at the Southern Border." The panel, which will be in person in the Core Center, Mooney 339 and on Teams, will be moderated by Jonathan Heaps, Ph.D., who teaches in the Core and also serves as the director of Bernard Lonergan Institute, Center for Catholic Studies and editor of The Lonergan Review. The panelists will be Susan Reynolds, assistant professor of Catholic Studies and interim director of Catholic Studies the Candler School of Theology, Graduate Division of Religion at Emory University and Abbey Murphy, Ph.D., student at Boston College.

Abbey Murphy, Ph.D., student at Boston College.

The panel, which is timely in terms of current events, is also closely related to several texts in Core I, in particular, where the issuing of welcoming the stranger is explored explicitly in Scripture (in Genesis, Exodus, and the Book of Ruth) as well as implicitly in the moral and ethical aspects covered in many of the other texts. Heaps explains, "Migration has been a highly-salient issue in several U.S. elections in a row and consistently a topic treated by Pope Francis, so I am glad we have been able to bring two extremely thoughtful Catholic scholars to share their reflections on their first-hand experiences at the southern border with our faculty and students."

The panelists will be present on Teams, but Heaps will be in person, and Father Gerry Buonopane, Ph.D., vice president of Academics and Catholic Identity, will join us to welcome attendees. Faculty, administrators and of course students are all welcome. Light refreshments will be served if you join us in person.

If you cannot come in person, here is the Teams link.

The event is co-sponsored by the Catholic Studies Program, the Catholic Studies Center, and the Center for Faculty Development, and University Core.
