Senate Republicans mark historic Swearing-In Day

Today, California Senate Republicanscelebrated a momentous day as three new members and one returning members of the Senate Republican Caucus were sworn in. With the California State Senate reaching 50% women for the first time, the Senate Republican Caucus is also celebrating for the first time that a majority of the caucus membership will be women, including three of the five Republican women are Latinas.

"Our caucus continues to grow, and we are happy to welcome our new members," said Caucus chair Senator Kelly Seyarto(R-Murrieta). "With these new additions and our commitment to the people we serve, it is an exciting time to be a Republican in California. We are ready to bring our legislative priorities forward to continue our work to fix California."

This historic election year marks the first time since 1980 that Senate Republicans successfully flipped a seat against an incumbent Democrat during a Presidential General Election.

"The people of California sent a clear message during this election season. They are done with the majority party's failure to address the most important issues we face and they are ready for a return to commonsense, solution-focused governing," said Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones(R-San Diego). "We are thrilled to see Californians standing up against the Democrat machine and declaring, 'enough is enough.'"

Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh(R-Yucaipa) won re-election to a second term representing the newly drawn 19th Senate District. Winning her first election in 2020, she made history as the first Republican Latina elected to the State Senate.

"I'm humbled by the trust the voters of the newly redrawn SD19 have placed in me," said Sen. Ochoa Bogh. "It is a testament to the hard work we've done these past four years, facilitating dialogue, education, and advocacy for improving the quality of life for our region and California as a whole. We will continue to work wholeheartedly with our colleagues in an effort to create a California that is more affordable, safe, and where economic opportunity abounds."

Among some of the newly elected women lawmakers to the California State Senate, Senator Suzette Martinez Valladares(R-Santa Clarita) and Senator Megan Dahle (R-Bieber), took the oath of office this morning at the State Capitol.

"Californians are increasingly concerned about the future of our state," said Sen. Valladares. "Today marks the start of a fight for the solutions our communities deserve and I'm both ready and eager to get to work for the people of my district and California. Together we can bring accountability, deliver results, and restore confidence in our state's leadership."

Senator Valladares is a former Assemblymember who has a background in business and operating a non-profit. She describes herself as a "wife, mom, and problem-solver." Joining her at today's momentous ceremony were her husband Shane, and daughter Charlotte.

Senator Megan Dahle also won her election in a landslide victory to represent California's 1st Senate District. A former member of the State Assembly, Dahle is a small business owner, mother of three, and an education advocate.

"I am honored to have been elected by the people of the 1st Senate District to serve as their voice in the Capitol," said Sen. Dahle. "From the fields to the fuel pump, we need solutions that ease the burden on families and small businesses-not policies that drive costs even higher. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work in the Senate fighting for common-sense solutions that protect our way of life and create opportunities for all Californians."

Also taking the oath of office for the first time today included Senator Dr. Steven Choi (R-Irvine), who defeated a heavily backed Democrat incumbent and made history as the first Senate Republican to oust a Democrat incumbent in a Presidential general election since 1980. A former member of the State Assembly, Choi also served as the mayor of Irvine and as a professor at both the University of Southern California and UC Irvine.

"I am honored and humbled to have been elected to serve as a voice for my constituents in the Capitol," said Sen. Choi. "California used to be a place where families came to pursue their American Dream. Sadly, now they are strapped with high prices, burdensome regulations, and rising crime. I will work to make California a better place to live, work and raise a family."

Other returning members of the now 9 member Senate Republican Caucus include Leader Jones, Senators Marie Alvarado-Gil (Jackson), Shannon Grove (Bakersfield), Roger Niello(Fair Oaks), and Kelly Seyarto (Murrieta).
