NRC to host meeting on Davis-Besse plant performance

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will discuss the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant safety performance last year in a public meeting this Thursday, August 29.

The Ohio plant, operated by Vistra, was under increased scrutiny during the first half of 2023 due to a security finding from the NRC. The agency has since completed a follow-up inspection and determined that the operators have appropriately addressed the issue.

Plant inspections are performed by two NRC resident inspectors and inspection specialists from the agency's Region III Office in Lisle, Illinois.

Meeting details: Davis-Besse's open house will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (EDT) this Thursday at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, located at 14000 W. State Route 2, Oak Harbor, Ohio.

The public will be able to speak directly with NRC staff, who will share their assessment of the plant's 2023 performance. Staff responsible for plant inspection and oversight, including the resident inspectors, will be available to address regulatory or technical questions and concerns.

Vistra highlights: Davis-Besse's parent company recently secured license renewal for units 1 and 2 of its Commanche Peak nuclear power plant, now set to expire on February 8, 2050, and February 2, 2053, respectively. The NRC announced the plant extensions for Commanche Peak in July.

Vistra has also applied for license renewal for its Perry nuclear plant, also in Ohio, which is currently under NRC review.
