Draft Mining Standards Fall Short of Necessary Protections

WASHINGTON - The four corporate partners that make up the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative on Wednesday issued a draftof its proposed mining standards, governance model, and assurance processes. In response, Chelsea Hodgkins, senior EV supply chain policy advocate with Public Citizen's Climate Program, issued the following statement:

"The draft standard marks the latest attempt by the mining industry to self-regulate and greenwash a horrendous record of human rights abuses and environmental destruction. Simply put, the proposal fails in its efforts to push the mining industry to be more responsible.

"The Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative's proposal is a dangerous distraction that consolidates the power of the mining industry and perpetuates a race to the bottom.

"At a moment when progress in the sector is so desperately needed, the mining industry is wasting time and resources by doubling down on a 'standard' that lacks the necessary civil society support and largely ignores the concerns of mining-affected communities."
