Olympia 2045: Public Safety Chapter Update
|
|
The City of Olympia is updating its comprehensive plan through a process called Olympia 2045. The City's comprehensive plan helps us use limited resources and funding wisely and efficiently to better create the community we want. It helps us determine what's needed to achieve our goals, set priorities, plan investments, build infrastructure, adopt regulations, and craft annual work plans.
Comprehensive planning is required for cities of Olympia's size and the Olympia 2045 update is due to the State in 2025.
The comprehensive plan's draft Public Safety chapter has been renamed; it was formerly the Public Services chapter. The new title reflects certain elements such as housing and land use policies and goals that are moved from the Public Safety chapter to other more relevant chapters. The Public Safety chapter is now exclusively focused on community safety, through code enforcement, policing, and fire and medical emergency services. The overarching goal of the Public Safety chapter is to ensure that all Olympians feel safe and receive reliable, compassionate care.
The Public Safety chapter includes new or updated policies and goals informed by several recent public participation processes, such as:
-
One Community Plan
-
Reimagining Public Safety
-
Community Oversight of Law Enforcement
-
The Resident Satisfaction Survey
The draft Public Safety chapter has been reviewed by Olympia's Planning Commission, Social Justice & Equity Commission, and the Community Livability & Public Safety Committee. The public may also review a draft of the chapter available online.
Olympia City Council will consider the revised chapter at a Study Session on December 3, 2024, and later for adoption in late 2025. To stay informed on the Olympia 2045 process, sign up for Planning & Development e-news notices at www.olympiawa.gov/news.
