Suicide prevention events planned

Two upcoming events at Pittsburg State University will shine a spotlight on suicide prevention and mental health. One is open to the public, and one is just for students.

Sept. 10

The Wellness Team is planning a program in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept. 10.

It will begin at 7 p.m. at the University Lake and East shelter house, and will include a welcome and remarks by Taylor Panczer, coordinator of Wellness and Student Advocacy Services, and April Lemon, director of Behavioral Health.

Lemon and four other therapists also will be available to anyone who needs help debriefing.

Those who attend will be invited to send a flower bud across University Lake in remembrance of someone they know who lost their life to suicide. Guests also will have the opportunity to write a letter to a loved one.

The event will be dedicated to Gabe Wightman, a student lost last winter to suicide.

"His parents and Gabe's friends are passionate about holding this event and plan to attend," Panczer said.

Sept. 17

With the support of Campus Activities and Campus Police, the Greek Leadership Council will host an engaging and informative session, "Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention," on Sept. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Miller Theatre at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.

The session will feature renowned speaker and activist Dennis Gillan from Half a Sorrow Foundation.

Half a Sorrow provides critical resources to help prevent suicide and support healing after a tragic loss, including speaking engagements, training workshops, consulting, and online resources.

On a mission to reverse the current trends in completed suicides and to reduce the stigma associated with getting help, founder Dennis Gillan draws from his own experience of profound personal tragedy to empower individuals, organizations, and communities.

The session will be free and open to students only.
