Honors From Military Veterans in Journalism

Military Veterans in Journalism recognized three Times reporters in its Top 10 Veterans in Journalism for 2024. Congratulations to Thomas Gibbons-Neff, Rachel Nostrant and Eve Sampson.

The organization's annual Top 10 list recognizes and celebrates the outstanding contributions of veterans excelling in news media.

T.M., a Marine Corps veteran, started at The Times in the Washington bureau in 2017. He later moved to the International desk, serving as Kabul bureau chief and reporting on the war in Ukraine. He was recognized for "Ukraine, a Sniper Mission and the Myth of the 'Good Kill.'" This spring, he became a correspondent on the National desk covering gun culture and policy,

A fellow Marine Corps veteran, Rachel is also a reporter on National, with a focus on how political, legislative and societal issues affect people with disabilities. Rachel, who has written for Reuters, New York magazine and The Associated Press. was recognized for a piece on Military.com, "Unsupervised: Military Child Care Centers Slow to Report Abuse with Little Oversight."

And Eve, who served as an Army engineering officer after graduating from West Point and has also reported for The A.P., is now covering international breaking news. Eve's honored piece ran in The Washington Post, "Ukraine Is Now the Most Mined Country. It Will Take Decades to Make Safe."

Both Rachel and Eve are members of the 2024-25 New York Times Fellowship class, a yearlong immersive work program that aims to cultivate the next generation of journalists by elevating their news reporting skills.

Military Veterans in Journalism's Top 10 was selected by a committee of journalists. The group said, "This year's winners have displayed exceptional skill, compassion, and a relentless commitment to shedding light on important issues."
