Invasive Plant Species Removal Pilot Begins in Loudoun

Invasive plant species that have taken root in Loudoun County will be the target of a pilot removal project starting this fall. During its September 4, 2024, meeting, the Board of Supervisors appropriated $150,000 of the Fiscal Year 2024 fund balance to implement up to six invasive plant species management projects that will be administered by the Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District (LSWCD) in collaboration with the Loudoun Invasives Removal Alliance (LIRA).

The Board's appropriation enables LSWCD to begin work now on a pilot program. Applications are now being accepted from Loudoun County property owners. Requirements and guidelines for the pilot program as well as an application form can be found at loudounsoilandwater.com/lipsr.

The Board took the action due to the recognized problem of invasive plants increasingly impacting the county's natural habitats and quality of life. The current project is a first step in the county's efforts to establish a countywide invasive species removal program.

Loudoun County is currently collaborating with LSWCD, LIRA and a consultant to fully develop and recommend a permanent Invasive Plant Species Removal program framework, project eligibility criteria, and reporting and auditing components. A report and programmatic recommendations are anticipated in early 2025.

The future permanent program is intended to provide residents with resources to fight invasive species in an effort to minimize their impact on our community. The county partnered with LIRA and LSWCD because their missions align with the county's desire to guard against the adverse effects of invasive plant species and its conservation work.
