Inclement weather, related time and attendance policies

As winter weather can be unpredictable, the university is reminding the community about how it manages inclement weather events. Safety is the top priority.

In the event of inclement winter weather, such as snow and ice, the university assesses whether it is appropriate to operate on a normal schedule, a delayed start, early closure or full day closure. The university rarely fully closes because students live on campus, outside events are scheduled, and services must be delivered to incoming and existing students. The university makes every effort to alert the campus community of a delay or closure at its physical campus as early as possible. However, weather can be unpredictable, and alerts may be sent later than desired.

Campus alerts about closures, delays or operational changes

  • Emergency Alerts: Bronco Alerts will be texted and emailed to the campus community if there is a delay or closure. Visit the Bronco Alert website for information on alerts from the university's emergency notification system.
  • Website: Updates of a closure or delay will be added to Boise State's homepage.
  • Social Media: Follow Boise State's social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and X (formally Twitter) for updates.

If the university has not announced a closure or delay as described above, the campus remains open.

What should students and employees do during closures?

For students and faculty:

  • Scheduled face-to-face classes during a closure or delay will not take place on the physical campus. At faculty discretion, they may transition to a remote class. Students should check their course Canvas site or email for messages from faculty.
  • Remote classes will be held as usual. Asynchronous online courses continue without interruption.
  • If you are a student employee, please consult with your supervisor.

For staff and faculty:

  • Employees who are essential to campus operations and student services will be required to report to work. Each vice president will determine critical business functions and work attendance requirements for their divisions, including if business functions can be performed remotely during periods of inclement weather, and will communicate those to employees, regardless of what is communicated to the general university population.

What about traveling to and from campus?

Employees should make a reasonable effort to report to work, however, employees are also encouraged to exercise appropriate judgment and take responsibility for their own safety. Please bear in mind that weather conditions may vary considerably across the Treasure Valley, and there will be times when the campus will remain open even when weather and driving conditions may be different in the area of the valley where an employee lives.

Employees unable to safely report to work or anticipate arriving late should contact their supervisor and request to use vacation time or work from home, if possible. Supervisors and managers are reminded to be responsive to such requests.

When does the closure end?

Campus closures remain in effect from the time the campus is officially closed until midnight unless a different schedule is announced.
