UNM enrollment continues growth, incoming student GPAs rise, fall 2024 data show

According to data released this semester, enrollment at The University of New Mexico is once again on the rise.

For fall 2024, there were 3,642 new first-year student registrations at the Albuquerque campus, which surpasses last year's record-setting 3,611 - and the largest incoming class since the University opened its doors in 1889.

Total enrollment at the Albuquerque campus also grew to 23,228 for fall 2024, an increase of 2.6% (598 students) over last year. Total enrollment across all UNM campuses also increased by 1% to 27,075 students.

Fall 2024 first-year class snapshot (Main campus)

  • This year's record first-year class reflects an increase of 31 more students over fall 2023.
  • Among new first-year students, 79.9% are from New Mexico, 17.6% are from out-of-state, and 2.5% are international.
  • Students in the freshman class come from 48 U.S. states and territories, and 26 countries outside the U.S.

In addition to the numeric gains, the incoming cohort of students is increasingly diverse and more academically prepared to succeed. New students with a high school grade-point average of 3.5 or better have increased by 6% since last year (1,694 students in fall 2023 compared to 1,792 students in fall 2024).

UNM's first-year class is one of the most diverse in school history, with 73.6% of new students coming from traditionally underrepresented populations. In the incoming fall 2024 cohort, Hispanic students increased 1.9%, comprising 54.4% of their class; African American students increased 0.8%; American Indian students increased 7.1%; and international students increased 57.9%.

Overall, when compared to last fall, enrollment diversity of the student body also increased by 4.6% for Hispanic students, 8.3% for African American students, and 2.2% for international students.

"This is the third consecutive fall increase in enrollment at The University of New Mexico and our largest incoming class in history, two clear indicators that increasing numbers of students from across our state, the nation, and the world recognize the academic quality of instruction and the value of a degree from UNM," said Dan García, UNM's vice president for enrollment management. "I couldn't be happier for these and our other successes."

Several key categories saw continued increases at the state's flagship university for fall 2024, including the retention of students the last couple of years. Third-semester retention increased from 72% for the fall 2022 cohort to 75% for the fall 2023 cohort. In addition, other notable enrollment increases include a 4.7% increase in returning students, a 6.5% increase in the sophomore class, a 10.5% in the junior class, a 5.2% increase in the senior class, and a 36% increase in UNM branch campus transfers.

Of UNM's branch campuses, Gallup and Taos increased enrollment by 1.6% and 5.5%, respectively.

"The continuing upward trend in enrollment at The University of New Mexico is not only exciting news, but also directly reflects our success as an institution in providing a world-class education and an engaging, supportive student experience," said University of New Mexico President Garnett S. Stokes. "It is also encouraging to see such a large first-year class - the largest we've ever had in school history - as well as a class as diverse as New Mexico itself."

The University of New Mexico is one of only 147 institutions in the nation - and the only one in New Mexico - classified as a Carnegie Research I University, the highest research activity. Additionally, it is one of less than two dozen R1 universities in the nation designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.
