DIFS Shares Insurance Reminders for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

(LANSING, MICH) October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding consumers that under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most health plans must provide free preventive services such as breast cancer screenings.

"In Michigan, more than 9,400 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2024, and an estimated 1,350 people will die of the disease," said DIFS Director Anita Fox. "Breast cancer screenings are an important prevention tool and are covered by most health insurance plans with no out of pocket costs."

The ACA requires most health insurance plans to cover mammograms for women 40 years of age and older without out-of-pocket costs like copays or deductibles.

Additionally, under Michigan law, health insurance plans are required to provide coverage for breast cancer services, including diagnostic, outpatient treatment, and rehabilitative services subject to the plan's cost sharing arrangement. Consumers should discuss with their health care provider about which services are right for them and if they have any questions about their coverage, they should contact their health plan at the number on their insurance card.

If Michiganders do not have health insurance, Open Enrollment for 2025 health coverage runs from November 1, 2024, through January 15, 2025. Consumers must select a plan no later than December 15, 2024, for coverage to start on January 1, 2025.

Open Enrollment gives Michiganders the chance to take advantage of savings that can help make insurance more affordable. For 2024, nearly 90% of enrolled Michiganders qualified for a subsidy, with many finding a plan for less than $10 per month. Visit HealthCare.gov for more information.
