I will start a few words in English, and then I will continue the rest of my speech in Mandarin.

Tribute to Huangshi Zonghui

First of all, I am very happy to join you this evening to mark the 100th anniversary of Huang Clan Association in Singapore. I understand that there are quite a number of overseas guests with us today. People from the Huang Clan from around the world who have joined us here in Singapore to celebrate this happy occasion. So let us give them a round of applause to welcome them.

This is truly a remarkable milestone because not many organisations in Singapore can claim to have 100 years of history. How many people here know what life was like in 1924 in Singapore? It is remarkable that you can still find the old pictures in the video earlier. All of us in the Huang clan can take pride in this milestone and in our rich culture and history. So this evening, we celebrate together with great pride at our 100th birthday.

Even as we celebrate the past, we should also look forward to the future. I'm glad that Huangshi Zonghui is taking proactive steps to connect with the younger generation as you heard just now from the young Secretary-General of the Huang Clan himself, Mr Stanley Ng.

Through mentorship, education, and leadership development, Huangshi Zonghui's youth group has become a vibrant and key part of the association and this bodes well for the future. I am confident the younger generation of members will eventually take over the leadership baton and they will take the Huang Clan forward to even greater heights. Let us give all the young people in the Huang Clan a round of applause to encourage them.

Once again, my congratulations to everyone in the Huang Clan on this 100th anniversary milestone and may all of you enjoy this wonderful evening. Thank you.

Role of Clan Associations

黄氏总会会长、各位董事会成员
各位来宾
女士们，先生们
大家晚上好

我很荣幸出席今晚的黄氏总会百年庆典.

会馆经历了百年历史，也见证了大家所付出的心血和文化传承。所以今晚，让我向黄氏总会的所有宗兴们，表示衷心的祝贺。

像黄氏总会这样的宗乡会馆在新加坡历史中扮演了重要的角色。

先辈们离开自己的家乡，独自到南洋谋生，所幸得到了各个宗乡会馆的帮助， 解决了住宿、找工作、孩子的教育等问题。

同时，会馆也照顾了会员，帮助生病或者失业的乡亲，协助办理人生红白大事。

同乡的关怀让他们可以安定下来。会馆也成为他们在新加坡能够互相依靠的地方。

当然现在的新加坡，跟以前已经完全不同。

比起殖民时期，我们现在的生活水平有很大的改善，而当年会馆负起的社会责任，很多现在也由政府来承担。

面对这样的改变，有人可能会问：如今的新加坡还需要宗乡会馆吗？

我的答案是：绝对需要。

我相信在现代社会中，宗乡会馆依然扮演着重要的社会角色。

第一，是保留和传承我们的传统文化与价值观。

我们的文化与价值观塑造了我们的身份认同与归属感。在一个通讯高度发达的环境里，人们更容易接触到外来的理念和价值观。这可能造成我们的人民在思想、价值观上，会产生分歧。

尤其是社会出现争议性课题时，我们可能无法达成共识，这将使我们的社会越来越分化。我们可以看到这现象在其他国家不断发生。

庆幸的是，这现象没有在新加坡出现。虽然我们是一个开放、多元，建国历史相对较短的国家，但是我们已经建立了独特的新加坡身份认同感和共同价值观。新加坡同胞之间齐心协力、互相信任。因此，当我们面临挑战时，能够团结一致，越战越勇。

宗乡会馆也为建立这份国家认同感做出不少贡献。各个会馆都积极地推广华族文化，保存华族的核心传统价值观。这些价值观对于现代新加坡还是具有意义的。同时，会馆对新加坡多元种族政策的支持，也有助于推进我们多元文化社会的种族和谐和社会凝聚力。

第二，宗乡会馆在帮助新移民融入新加坡方面，还是有着重要的责任。

新加坡是一个移民社会。我们的先辈南下寻找更好的生活，在这里落地生根。如今，我们依然欢迎抱有相同价值观的新移民加入我们的大家庭。

就如以往，会馆能把大家聚在一起，并且在互相交流中，拉近彼此的距离。所以接下来，希望你们可以通过不同的管道，让土生土长的新加坡人和新移民有更多机会接触和相处，培养认同感。这一来，新移民就能够更加熟悉我国多元种族、多元文化的社会面貌和国情，也更容易融入我们的社会。

第三，宗乡会馆多年来一直都向社区里的弱势群体伸出援手。

虽然政府也推出了很多帮助措施，但是像黄氏总会这样的民间团体所提供的帮助还是非常重要。你们与社区紧密的联系和人与人之间的接触，能让个别受惠群体更亲切地感受到社区的人情味。这是政府机构比较难做到的。

所以，会馆不遗余力地帮助弱势群体，比如说通过奖学金、度岁金等援助计划，帮助社会中有需要的人。这都非常值得我们表扬。

以上就是为什么宗乡会馆在我国仍然重要的原因。在这里，我想代表国人表达我们对会馆的感谢。我相信随着新加坡步入下一个阶段的国家建设，会馆可以发挥更大的影响力，继续贡献，继续团结社会。

当然面对未来，宗乡会馆另一个重要的事项是领导层的更新。会馆必须不断地引进年轻成员，以维持活力，带领会馆登上新的高峰。

政府非常重视宗乡会馆为我国做出的贡献，所以在多年前，我们设立了华社联络组，以增进政府与华社之间的联系。

这由唐振辉部长以及好几位部长和议员们所带领的华社联络组，通过与社区的积极互动，加强了政府与华社之间的信任。在接下来的几年，我会继续引进新成员，也会更新华社联络组的组员，让年轻一代的领袖建立密切的联系。 这稳固的互信关系，对推动社区和新加坡的发展是非常重要。

今晚是黄氏总会重要的里程碑，我希望总会能继续发扬本地的华族文化，团结宗亲。在此祝贺黄氏总会百尺竿头，更进一步，期盼会员继续团结一心，为会馆、为新加坡再创辉煌。
