Composting Kit Giveaway Event

City Nursery | 1010 NE 3rd Avenue

Saturday, October 19th

9:00 am - 2:00 pm

The City of Pompano Beach Environmental Services Department is offering its residents a free composting kit on Saturday, October 19th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the City Nursery, 1010 NE 3rd Avenue.

The event will be held rain or shine. Do your part to keep waste out of the landfills!

The composting kit includes "The Earth Machine" and a collection basket for your kitchen. The Earth Machine is an 80-gallon durable backyard compost bin designed to compost food and yard waste, effectively diverting it from landfills.

Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such as leaves and food scraps, into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil and plants. It is a great way to recycle the organic waste we generate at home. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, food scraps and garden waste combined make up more than 28 percent of what we throw away. Food waste is a significant burden on the environment, and processing it is costly.

There are various ways to use your finished compost. You can sprinkle compost on top or mix it into your flower and vegetable beds, gently rake compost into tree beds, blend it with potting soil to revitalize indoor plants, or spread it on top of the soil on your lawn as a soil amendment. Adding compost to your garden helps improve your soil's structure and overall health. Compost will help the soil retain moisture and increase your overall earthworm and microbial population, which are biological controls against unwanted pests. In addition, compost will provide a slow release of macronutrients, which means that your plantings will get a steady supply of nutrients as needed.

The composting kit is free to residents of Pompano Beach. Proof of Pompano Beach residency is required. One Earth Machine per single-family residence. Multi-family residences require written approval from the condominium association or property management prior to distribution or delivery.
