New Custom House Mural Captures Portland's Maritime Legacy

PORTLAND, Maine - July 30, 2024 - Custom House Wharf, long a cornerstone of Portland's maritime life, has recently been adorned with a striking testament to its storied past. Artist Timothy Goldkin of Ramble More Design is set to unveil an 8 x10 foot mural depicting a historic scene of the wharf from the turn of the 20th century, celebrating the enduring spirit of Portland's working waterfront.

Located at the corner of Custom House Wharf and Commercial Street on the side of Casco Variety (94 Commercial Street), this installation promises to captivate both residents and visitors alike. Installed in July 2024, the mural aims to reconnect the community with its maritime roots amid ongoing economic and environmental challenges facing the waterfront.

"The waterfront has always been the heartbeat of Portland, defining its character and shaping its identity," remarked Timothy Goldkin, reflecting on his deep ties to the city and its maritime culture"This mural is more than a public work of art; it's a window to our past and an attempt to help preserve our future by reminding us of the invaluable contributions of our seafaring forebearers and those still working on the water today."

The mural, crafted using alternative printing processes and encapsulated in an aged frame reminiscent of old-time Portland, offers a tactile sense of history and encourages viewers to consider the city's rich heritage. This artwork is poised to become a focal point for reflection and dialogue on the evolving waterfront district.

The installation is part of Goldkin's broader initiative to bring historical artworks into public spaces across Maine, fostering community engagement and preserving local heritage. "This project marks a significant milestone in my career," Goldkin shared, "and underscores the potential of public art to enrich our shared spaces and ignite conversations about our collective past and future."

An introductory event will mark the unveiling of the mural on Thursday, August 8th, at 3 p.m. in the alleyway between Custom House Wharf and Portland Pier. The event will feature remarks from the artist, current members of the waterfront community, and an historian. Community members, fishermen, local stakeholders, and media are all invited to join us in celebrating Portland's maritime legacy.

This project was made possible through a grant from the Maine Arts Commission-an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts-and the generous contributions from our sponsors: Casco Variety, Fortland, Andy's Old Port Pub, Maine Day Ventures, and Maggie Wier & Robb Wesby
