World Health Organization urges rapid access to mpox diagnostic tests, invites manufacturers to emergency review

Posted on 05.09.2024

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) askedmanufacturers of mpox in vitrodiagnostics (IVDs) to submit an expression of interest for Emergency Use Listing (EUL).

As part of its efforts to scale up diagnostic capacity to respond to the upsurge of cases, The WHO can use the EUL procedure to approve medical products such asvaccines, diagnosticsand treatments, evaluating the acceptability of using specific products for time-limited procurement in emergency situations. The process aims to assist countries that have not approved medical products through national approval processes to procure critically needed products, such as tests, through UN agencies and other partners.

The WHO declaredthe recent spread of clade I mpox a health emergency of international concern on 14 August, calling for a coordinated international response to the virus outbreak.
