City IT receives Esri Award

IT announces award

The City of Raleigh IT Department was presented with the Enterprise GIS award during Esri's 2024 International User Conferenceon July 15.

The City's Geographic Information System (GIS) platform is centrally managed within the IT department but has key users across other city departments. These highly skilled and dedicated staff provide quality support, consulting, analysis, apps, and tools to the City and the public. GIS is a technology that is used to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data to help users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. GIS is fundamental to the City's strategic plan with key focus areas including transportation, economic development, natural resources, health and safety, and arts and culture.

"The prestigious Enterprise GIS Award is a testament to the City team's dedication, innovation and hard work in leveraging GIS to enhance our city," said City of Raleigh's GIS and Emerging Technology Manager James Alberque.

The City of Raleigh was acknowledged with this award because they have transformed from an ordinary GIS department, focused on foundation and transactional requests, to integrating GIS with most City services. City IT is committed to enterprise and departmental geospatial work (data that is associated with a specific location), to be innovative through research and development efforts, has a strong partnership with Esri and continues to increase government efficiency, engagement and transparency.

GIS use examples include:

  • City's Emergency Management using ArcGIS online dashboards and real-time data from GeoEvent and Living Atlas when responding to emergencies,
  • Raleigh Water using ArcGIS Indoors to manage assets and integration with Cityworks,
  • Citywide equity explorer project that helps improve departments workflows, and

  • Geo-equity projects focused on housing justice and environmental justice.

Raleigh's core city and departmental services are valuable and highlight the importance of how innovation through research and development leads to enhanced government experiences for employees and the public.
