Press Release

On July 3, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., State Police were called to I-84 in the town of Montgomery for a report of a serious accident involving a school bus.

A preliminary investigation determined that a school bus, carrying 28 campers from Camp Pupa in Swan Lake to Danbury, Connecticut, was traveling eastbound on I-84 when a rear passenger side tire experienced a tire failure.

As the driver of the bus, Carlos Y. Carrasco, 38, of Monticello, began to reduce speed, a 17-year-old female passenger jumped from the rear emergency exit of the bus while it was still moving. The 17-year-old female victim was transported to Westchester Medical Center for life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
