The City of Grand Junction was awarded the Columbine Award for New Park Design for Dos Rios Park. Among all parks developed recently in Colorado, Dos Rios Park emerged as the state's top new park. The award was presented during the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA) conference on October 30, 2024, the annual gathering of over 700 parks and recreation professionals from throughout the state.
The Columbine Award reflects the positive growth of the Grand Junction community. This recognition highlights the collective efforts of local government, private entities, nonprofits, and residents to enhance Grand Junction with more opportunities and an improved quality of life. Additionally, the award acknowledges the recognition from other towns and cities regarding Grand Junction's progress.
The CPRA award program is designed to recognize and celebrate the individuals and organizations that contribute to the success and value of parks and recreation in the state of Colorado.
The Riverfront at Dos Rios represents a transformative initiative for the Grand Junction community. The site formerly had 8,500 abandoned junk cars and was used as a municipal landfill as recently as 1990. The Dos Rios Park and the larger Dos Rios development are set to emerge as a center for commerce and an enhanced quality of life that all residents of Grand Junction can take pride in.
