Rep. Matt Reeves Recognized for Georgia Business Law Leadership

ATLANTA - State Representative Matt Reeves (R-Duluth) was recently recognized by the Uniform Law Commission for sponsoring the Georgia's Uniform Commercial Code Modernization Act, House Bill 1240, which was carried in the State Senate by President Pro Tempore John F. Kennedy and signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp in May of 2024.

"I was proud to sponsor the Georgia Commercial Code Modernization Act," said Rep. Matt Reeves. "It was certainly time for Georgia's commercial code to be updated. With the extent of technological advances over the past two decades, it was crucial that we modernize finance and transaction laws to protect and support small businesses across the state of Georgia. I am also thankful to Governor Kemp and President Pro Tem Kennedy for their support of HB 1240."

House Bill 1240, which is 116 pages long, updated the 900-page Georgia commercial code for the first time in two decades. HB 1240 modernized Georgia's financing and secured transaction laws for the benefit of small businesses and to ensure that Georgia's business laws are up to date with technological advances, which have occurred over the past 20 years.

HB 1240 was requested by the State Bar of Georgia's Business Law Section.

"We are incredibly fortunate to have lawyers/legislators like Rep. Matt Reeves who can carry an important and complicated bill like the update of the UCC to pass it through the Georgia General Assembly in a single session," said State Bar President Ivy Cadle of Macon. "This update is important work and will be very helpful to the business community of this state."
