Building Preparedness: Public Invited to Meet with Local Officials on Tsunami Warning, Ways to Boost Preparedness

Half Moon Bay -Members of the public will have the opportunity to ask San Mateo County emergency officials about the local response to the Dec. 5 tsunami warningthis Thursday (Dec. 19) in Half Moon Bay.

The meeting will bring together the public and officials from the San Mateo County Department of Emergency Management and first responders to share information and explore ways to increase preparedness for future incidents.

Thursday's 6 p.m. meeting at Mavericks Housecaps a series of seven information-gathering sessions hosted by San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller, whose district includes the coast from Pacifica to the Santa Cruz County border. Mueller on Thursday will share community responses.

"I greatly appreciate neighbors coming out and sharing their experiences, from which we can learn so we are better prepared for an actual event," Mueller said.

On hand Thursday will be Dr. Shruti Dhapodkar, director of the Department of Emergency Management, and first responders from a number of local agencies.

On Dec. 5, a magnitude 7.0 earthquakestruck at 10:44 a.m. off the coast of Humboldt County, triggering a brief tsunami warning for the California coast from the Oregon border to south of San Mateo County. The warning was canceled about an hour later.

Thursday's meeting will include information about the threat tsunamis pose to the San Mateo County coast as well as details about alert systems and community preparedness.
