New Mission Force Commander takes over EUMAM Mozambique

With a sober but dignified ceremony the new Mission Force Commander EUMAM Mozambique, the Brigadier-General Luis Fernando MACHADO BARROSOtook over from his predecessor Major-General Joao Goncalves. The event was attended by Mozambican government officials and EU ambassadors. Major-General Joao Goncalves started as the Mission Force Commander EUTM Mozambique. After the successful results of the EUTM Mozambique, the long-lasting EU military partnership with Mozambique continues with EUMAM Mozambique. EUMAM officially started 1 September 2024 and its aim is to ensure that the 11 Quick Reactoin Forces units trained by EUTM Mozambique become self-sufficient by June 2026, thus contributing to a create a safer and more secure environment in Cabo Delgado.

The EU and Mozambique have a longstanding partnership covering a wide range of fields, including the security and defence sector but also for example the EU Election Observer Mission which arrived last week. The excellent cooperation and close partnership between the Republic of Mozambique and the European Union will continue. We can count on Mozambique's full support for EUMAM's success.
