Volunteer Spotlight – Bonnie Heaton

First Mid is honored to recognize Bonnie Heaton, Wire Transfer Specialist, as our Volunteer Spotlight for October 2024. Bonnie is committed to supporting local community organizations through volunteerism, consistently demonstrating our core values.

What causes are you passionate about supporting through volunteerism? I am passionate about volunteering with youth softball and other events that make a difference in my community. I currently serve as treasurer for the Mattoon Girls Softball Association and have coached both rec league and travel teams for several years, including the current 12u Charleston Lady Knights Softball Team. Mentoring the players, becoming a trusted friend, and watching them grow as athletes and individuals brings me great joy. Additionally, I'm active with the One Stop Community Christmas annual event in Mattoon, serving on the Executive Committee and co-chairing First Mid's 10-13-year-old gift table. Helping brighten Christmas for families in need is incredibly rewarding. I also participate with Bowl for Kids' Sake benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Special Olympics Family Festival.

What would you tell others who are thinking about volunteering? If you're on the fence about volunteering, I encourage you to take the leap and get involved in your community! What you might see as a small act of volunteering can have a significant impact on someone else. Reflect on what interests you-whether it's spending time with kids, caring for pets, cooking for others, or something else entirely. When you volunteer in areas you enjoy, you'll have fun and gain valuable skills while connecting with people you might not have met otherwise.

What are ways that you think others can get involved? Reach out to local organizations, schools, family, and friends to see what opportunities are available. Participate in these events, get out there, get involved, and witness the impact it makes on your community firsthand. The joy you will feel from your contributions and helping others is immeasurable.
