Brazil's Participation in the 79th United Nations General Assembly

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is undertaking a working visit to New York on 21-25 September to head the Brazilian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly high-level week. The theme of the 79th Session will be "Unity in diversity, for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for everyone, everywhere".

On September 22, the President participated in the first session of the Summit of the Future, convened by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

On September 24, the President will deliver the opening speech at the General Debate of the General Assembly. As per tradition, Brazil will be the first country to speak in the General Debate.

On the same day, President Lula will co-chair, alongside the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, a roundtable on democracy and extremism, in order to discuss with other leaders the strengthening of democratic institutions.

On the 25th, the President will open the second G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting, together with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the President of the General Assembly, and the President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The meeting will be open to all UN member states and will be the first time in history that a G20 meeting will take place at the United Nations headquarters. Brazil will take this historic opportunity to launch, along with the other G20 members, a Call to Action on global governance reform.

The President will also hold bilateral meetings with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and with Heads of State and Government of other countries.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, will participate in meetings with counterparts from various countries and in events held by groups of which Brazil is a part, such as BRICS, IBSA, G77/China, G4, L.69 and the Contact Group of South American Foreign Ministers.
