Celebrate Clean Air Day early at this Sept. 29 community event

The City's Office of Climate Action and Sustainability is teaming up with Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District to host a Clean Air Day event on Sept. 29 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the at the Meadowview Certified Farmers Market (3501 Meadowview Rd.).

This event leads up to the statewide "Clean Air Day," on the first Wednesday of October, an initiative focused on improving air quality and protecting public health.

"There are so many actions that we can take as a community to improve our air quality," said City Sustainability Analyst Sarah Kolarik. "This event will bring free resources to help community members get involved."

The event will feature local vendors and organizations educating about air quality and providing resources to support clean air for all Event highlights include:

The City and the Air District in 2023 partnered to on a pilot project distributing 200 portable air sensors to residents, businesses and schools to enhance air quality data. The sensors provide real-time air quality information in underserved communities around Sacramento to help inform daily activities.

"The Air District is proud to partner with the City on this innovative project, which empowers residents, businesses, and schools with real-time air quality data," said Mark Loutzenhiser, Sac Metro Air District Director of Monitoring, Rules, and Planning. "By placing air sensors directly in underserved communities, we are helping to provide critical information that allows people to make informed decisions about their daily activities and improve understanding of air quality in Sacramento."

The pilot project also included neighborhood air quality monitoring and educational materials on air quality.

The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability works closely with City departments and the Sacramento community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
