August activities planned at Welk Homestead State Historic Site

BISMARCK, N.D. - The public is invited to blacksmith demonstrations and craft days this August at the Welk Homestead State Historic Site near Strasburg. All activities are free, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Aug. 3 Blacksmith Demonstration, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Bob McCay, an amateur blacksmith from Bismarck, will share his knowledge of the craft and use of the coal forge.

Aug. 3 German Russian Iron Crosses, 10:30 a.m. Bradley Haas, Ashley, and Jeff Malm, Kulm, will share their knowledge of the intricate craftsmanship required for making German Russian iron crosses. Discover the historical significance of the iron crosses found in cemeteries across North Dakota.

Aug. 24 Kite Flying and Pollinator Day, 1-3 p.m. Decorate your own kite and watch it soar over the homestead. Learn about the importance of butterflies and other pollinators in our environment, then paint a wooden butterfly to take home.

The Welk Homestead State Historic Site illustrates the history of agriculture in the early 20th century, German Russian culture and architecture, and the career of bandleader Lawrence Welk, who grew up on the farm.

The Welk Homestead, located at 845 88th St. SE, Strasburg, is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
