DLA employees learn ways to eliminate insider threat

FORT BELVOIR, Va. -

Each year, government agencies observe National Insider Threat Awareness Month to promote awareness of insider threats and remind employees of their responsibility to be vigilant. This years' theme is exactly what the Defense Logistics Agency Insider Threat Program team is here to do: Deter, Detect, Mitigate.

DLA's ITP is vital to helping employees detect potential risks and concerning behaviors, said DLA Chief of Staff Karyn Runstrom. Learning to recognize risk indicators and knowing how to report them can discourage potential insider threats while fostering a safer working environment.

"The importance of taking care of one another and our agency cannot be overstated. The workforce is DLA's No. 1 resource, and employee well-being is essential to completing our mission," Runstrom said.

Threat indicators include sudden personal difficulties such as financial trouble, abrupt changes in a co-worker's normal routine, angry outbursts, unreliability, and contempt towards policy.

These indicators, coupled with access to DLA installations, facilities, missions or resources, can pose a threat to the Defense Department and U.S. government and cause national damage via espionage, terrorism, unauthorized disclosure of national security information, or the loss or degradation of government resources and capabilities.

Reports to DLA's ITP are confidential and can be submitted to [email protected]. For more information, visit the new ITP SharePoint site at: https://dlamil.dps.mil/sites/InsiderThreat/SitePages/Home.aspx
