As previously released, on June 23, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 500 block Balmoral Street for the report of an injured adult female.
Central District General Patrol officers arrived and located the female who had sustained life-threatening injuries. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The Homicide Unit assumed the investigation and identified the victim as 29-year-old Norma Jean SUMNER. SUMNER was a Dauphin River First Nation memberbut had recently been residing in Winnipeg. Family notifications have been made.
The investigation has determined that the victim and suspect did not know one another before becoming involved in a physical altercation.The investigation continued, resulting in the suspect being identified. On July 3, 2024, North District General Patrol members arrested the suspect while he was walking in the 200 block of Salter Street. He was then turned over to the Homicide Unit for further processing.
Kyle Byron STRAIGHT, 23, has been charged with Manslaughter.
He has been detained in custody.
