Just one year after Serdar Celik, PhD, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, released his groundbreaking textbook "Sustainable Energy: Engineering Fundamentals and Applications," the book has earned widespread recognition, solidifying itself as a cornerstone for both students and professionals in the classroom as well as in the field. Celik's textbook puts an economic emphasis on practical applications through engineering concepts.

Reflecting on the creation of his textbook, Celik shared, "I have always been excited about green technologies, energy efficiency, and clean energy. As an engineer, this allowed me to approach these topics from an energy perspective. I started writing the book in January 2020, and it took three years to complete."

Among the challenges Celik faced during this process were mastering content outside his primary field, such as nuclear energy. "I had to study topics like nuclear energy just as a learner myself, which took considerable time," he explains.

The reception of the book has been positive, with distribution extending to Europe, Asia, Latin America, and North America. During his trip: "One professor mentioned he appreciated the book's organization and the problem-solving examples. Another complimented the illustrations," Celik notes.

Celik recently appeared at a book signing hosted by his publisher Cambridge University Press at their historic bookshop, which is the oldest in the UK, established in 1581. The experience was particularly memorable for him. "I was impressed by the Cambridge University campus," he recalls. "The bookshop, which has been around since 1581, was a significant part of the visit. Autographing my book there was quite a momentous occasion."

During his visit to Cambridge University Press, Celik also had interactions with various individuals at the bookshop. "I had a pleasant chat with an engineering faculty member and the staff. The hospitality was impressive," he says. He is excited about the marketing materials yet to be released, which include a video interview conducted during his visit.

Celik credits his work at SIUE as a significant influence when writing this particular text. His involvement in the Green Roof Environmental Evaluation Network (G.R.E.E.N) and research on HVAC systems have provided key information explored in his book. "Green roofs and HVAC systems are crucial because buildings consume a significant amount of energy. Effective solutions can lead to substantial energy savings," he explains.

Looking ahead, Celik is enthusiastic about ongoing and future projects. "I'm currently working on a solar energy project with graduate students, an HVAC project, and consulting on a green roof project."

Celik's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions through his research and teaching is undeniable. He looks forward to further contributions in the field. "I'm eager to dive into upcoming projects and collaborate with students and industry partners to drive innovative solutions in sustainability," he concludes.

With his book continuing to influence both the classroom and industry, Celik remains a key figure in the ongoing dialogue around sustainable energy engineering. His impactful research and teaching at SIUE further highlight his commitment to advancing innovative solutions in the field.
