Taxpayer Indicted on Sales Tax Evasion

GREENBRIER, Tenn. - The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to today's arrest of Brittany Cardwell for tax evasion. Her bond was set at $5,000.

Last week, a Robertson County Grand Jury indicted Cardwell on one felony count of tax evasion. The indictment alleges Cardwell provided false and fraudulent information to the Robertson County clerk's office regarding her registration of a personal vehicle.

"It's not fair to allow people to falsify vehicle registration documents by lowering the actual sales price," Revenue Chief Compliance Officer Tommy Sneed said. "The Department of Revenue pursues criminal sanctions to provide accountability for such actions."

If convicted, Cardwell could be sentenced to a maximum of two years in the state penitentiary and fined up to $3,000.

The department pursued this criminal case in cooperation with the nineteenth Judicial District Attorney Robert Nash's Office. Citizens who suspect violations of Tennessee's revenue laws should call the toll-free tax fraud hot line at (800) FRAUDTX (372-8389).
