- Strategic Directions for the ASEAN-Korea Centre to be unveiled --
Seoul, Korea -The 'International Conference on ASEAN-Korea Partnership 2024,' hosted by the ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC) and Korean Association for Southeast Asian Studies (KASEAS), will be held on 7 November 2024, at Lotte Hotel Seoul, Korea. Organized with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea and the ASEAN Secretariat, the Conference will be held under the theme "Towards a Sustainable and Resilient Future." As one of the key highlight events of ASEAN Week 2024, the Conference will commemorate the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-Korea relations and its elevation to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), as well as the 15th anniversary of the Centre's founding.
The Conference has been initiated to enhance and unify the ASEAN-Korea identity, while solidifying its role as a leading catalyst for an inclusive partnership. Distinguished participants at the opening ceremony include H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lao PDR, (ASEAN Chair for 2024); 1st Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Korea, H.E. Kim Hong Kyun; H.E. Russ Jalichandra, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand (Country Coordinator for ASEAN-Korea Relations from 2024 until 2027); and H.E. Dato' Astanah Abdul Aziz, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for the
Political-Security Community. The Conference will bring together government officials, diplomatic corps, analysts, academia, students and media from both Korea and ASEAN.
The Conference will feature four sessions: 1) Envisioning the ASEAN-Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, 2) Fostering Economic Resilience for Sustainable Growth, 3) Nurturing Socio-cultural Ties in the ASEAN-Korea Partnership, and 4) Charting the AKC's Strategic Vision. The political-security session will explore the future trajectory of ASEAN-Korea relations, focusing on the CSP and ASEAN's Post-2025 vision. The economic session will examine the potential of the partnership under the CSP, particularly in areas such as digital transformation and Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices. The socio-cultural
session will discuss critical areas for fostering mutual understanding , including tourism, youth exchanges, and media. In the last session, research findings on the Centre's mid-to-long-term strategy will be presented and discussed.
Secretary General Kim Jae-shin of the ASEAN-Korea Centre expressed optimism that ASEAN-Korea relations have flourished for the past 35 years across political-security, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions, culminating in the elevation to the CSP. He remarked, "This Conference will serve as a pivotal platform for policymakers, civil society representatives, think tanks, experts, scholars, and other stakeholders from both regions to come together, exchange ideas, and chart a blueprint for the ASEAN-Korea CSP, as recognized in the Chairman's Statement of the recent ASEAN-Korea Summit. I also hope the Conference will take a holistic approach in shaping the Centre's strategic plan beyond its
15th anniversary".
