New technologies: A necessary boost for women’s well-being

New technologies: A necessary boost for women's well-being

Despite the progress made in gender equality over the last century, the gap between men's and women's health remains a significant challenge. In Latin America and the Caribbean, it is estimated that it could take up to 53 years to achieve gender parity in health (WEF). This imbalance is reflected in insufficient investment, lack of research, scarcity of data, and limited quality of care specifically targeted to the needs of women.

According to estimates by the World Economic Forum and McKinsey Global Institute, closing this gap would have a transformative impact not only on the quality of life of 3.9 billion women in the world but also on the global economy: In a recent report, they highlighted that addressing this inequality could generate at least $1 trillion annually in economic productivity by 2040.

In this context, digital tools emerge as a promising way to promote a culture of preventive health. At Pro Mujer, we are committed to transforming the lives of women in Latin America and the Caribbean by promoting their health, well-being, and autonomy. Through innovative digital tools, such as health chatbots and telemedicine services, we have democratized access to preventive and educational information, even in rural and marginalized communities.

In places where the lack of medical personnel is a structural reality, telemedicineemerged as the most effective solution, identifying diseases in time and improving the quality of life of those who need it most. This tool allowed us to provide 7,400 remote medical consultations, carried out by specialists in different diagnoses.

Chatbotshave supported more than 16,000 people in 2024by providing information and giving women greater control over their health decisions:

Breast Cancer Chatbot
This chatbot helps users identify risk factors related to breast cancer, one of the main causes of female mortality. To date, it has been used by more than 5,500 women, promoting awareness and empowerment in their health care.

Diabetes Chatbot
This chatbot allows you to know your risk levels for Type 2 diabetes and receive recommendations to look after your health. More than 5,100 people have completed it, bolstering their ability to prevent and manage this chronic disease.

Sexual and Reproductive Health Chatbot
Designed to address critical issues such as sexual rights, family planning, and gender-based violence, this chatbot has provided crucial information to 5,600 women, positioning itself as an ally in promoting female autonomy and well-being.

We will soon be launching chatbots dedicated to menopause and menstruation, two critical women's health topics that require increased attention and educational resources.

Moreover, in 2024 Pro Mujer focused on the analysis and visibility of endometriosis, a disease that affects more than 190 million girls and women in the world (WHO). With the support of the Johnson & Johnson Foundation, "The Endo Diary"was born; it is a visual and user-friendly guide, designed to help understand and manage endometriosis from an intimate and accessible perspective. This tool aims to support women in Latin America and empower them with knowledge about their bodies and their health so that they can find comfort, understanding, and practical resourcesto manage this disease.

The project also focused on improving understanding and awareness of this condition in Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, as well as identifying barriers to accessing medical care. You can find all the information in the report generated by Pro Mujer and J&J Foundation.

Closing the health gap will not only add years to women's lives but also quality, allowing millions of women to reach their full potential. Unfortunately, despite their potential, FemTech platforms only receive 3% of total digital health funding (WEF). Investing in women's health is not just a market opportunity but a crucial investment in addressing historical inequalities. It is imperative to increase resources for research and development in women's health and strengthen digital initiatives that allow women to take control of their well-being.

At Pro Mujer, with the support of innovative technologies, we are moving forward and working to offer a digital springboard that leads the change. Through our technologies, we expand access to vital information and pave the way to a more just society, where every woman has the opportunity to live fully and contribute to collective progress.
