CSFD Incident Update: Dec. 11, 2024

On Wednesday, October 11 at 9:22 a.m. the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) responded to a structure fire on the 4300 block of Anvil Dr. Upon investigation by fire crews on scene, the cause of the fire has been classified as an accidental chimney fire.

CSFD was dispatched at 9:22 a.m. to a reported structure fire. Engine 25 arrived at 9:26 a.m. to smoke coming from the attic of a home on Anvil Dr. Upon entry to the home, Engine 25 crews made their way to the attic where they were met with fire coming from the chimney of the home. Firefighters on scene were able to contain the fire to the attic space and had the fire under control by 9:58 a.m.

One person was home at the time of the fire and reported to on scene crews they had a fire going in the fireplace since early in the morning. The homeowner reports they did not have smoke alarms and a bystander notified them of the fire. The homeowner was able to safely evacuate and did not suffer any injuries. Three people and four animals were displaced as a result of this fire. There were no injuries to any firefighters or other civilians.

CSFD would like to remind the community that smoke alarms save lives and should be installed on every level of the home and inside and outside every sleeping area. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly to confirm they're properly working. Additionally, as the temperature drops it is important to get chimneys inspected and cleaned by professionals annually. Before starting a fire in the fireplace the chimney flue needs to be open to safely remove smoke and gases from the home. 75% of chimney fires are caused by creosote buildup.
