Humanitarian Initiative Food for Gaza: Launch of a WFP-Farnesina Project for Food Aid to the Gaza Population

Today marks the beginning of a project launched by the World Food Programme (WFP) to alleviate the severe malnutrition affecting the population of Gaza.

The aid plan, supported by a EUR 12 million contribution from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will provide the most vulnerable families with approximately 4,000 tons of food supplies (flour, yeast, salt, and sugar) and includes the distribution of bread and other food items prepared by Gaza's network of bakers supported by WFP. The goal is to ensure access to food for 1.1 million inhabitants of the Strip over the next two months.

"The implementation of the WFP-Farnesina project is another step in the 'Food for Gaza' initiative to alleviate the suffering of the population in the Strip," commented Antonio Tajani, emphasising that "the resolution of the Middle East conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza are priorities on the government's agenda and for the Italian Presidency of the G7."

The WFP-Farnesina project is a new humanitarian initiative following the delivery of over 60 tons of food and medical supplies collected by the Italian Government, which arrived by air from Brindisi to Jordan last week as part of the "Food for Gaza" initiative, and will soon be transferred to the Strip. Additionally, the recent availability of a state-of-the-art scanner for the "maritime corridor" to the Strip, provided by the Port Authority of Gioia Tauro in coordination with the Customs and Monopolies Agency and Civil Protection, adds to these efforts.

"Food for Gaza" is a humanitarian initiative launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani last March, together with FAO, WFP (World Food Programme), IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies), and Civil Protection.
