FIJI HEAD OF STATE CELEBRATES WITH NIUE

The President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, along with the First Lady, Madam Filomena Katonivere, participated in this year's commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Niue's Constitution.

The Government of Niue marked its 50th anniversary as a self-governing state on October 19th, celebrating five decades of resilience, diplomacy, and sovereignty.

Niue gained self-governance in October 1974, a significant milestone in its history.

His Excellency and the Fijian delegation's presence at the commemoration further strengthens the diplomatic ties between Fiji and Niue as Niue seeks to enhance its international profile and build stronger connections with its Pacific neighbours.

In 2023, Fiji and Niue formalised their relationship through a joint communiqué, establishing diplomatic and friendly ties. Under the communiqué, collaborative opportunities have been explored across various sectors including trade, culture, education, and technology.

Fiji is the 26th country and only the fifth Pacific Island Nation, with which Niue has established diplomatic relations, following the Cook Islands, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu.

In the celebrations, Prime Minister of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi, emphasised the importance of the anniversary, stating that it reflects the strength and determination of the Niuean people in shaping their own future.

He stressed that the significant milestone marks a coming of age for the people of Niue and invites them to reflect on the shared past and to envision a bright future together.

"Fifty years ago, the people of Niue made a courageous and visionary decision. We honour and remember our ancestors and those who came before us for the hardships and sacrifices they endured to pave the way for us. They have lifted us above their shoulders towards a brighter, stronger future filled with possibilities."

"The people of Niue, whether they be on the island or living abroad, are at the heart of today's anniversary. Their strength, commitment and love for Niue is, above all else, what makes Niue's self-governance such a success story. As a country, we continue to make strides in improving the standard of living for our people, as well as advancing sustainable initiatives to protect our tāoga, environment and ocean, and I hope that today will bear witness to everything we have done and will continue to do,"

PM Tagelagi also thanked Niue's development partners for their ongoing commitment to the growth and expansion of the island.
