Maynooth University marked Science Week with a panel discussion on one of the most talked-about drugs of our times.

The public event, titled 'Ozempic - unravelling fact from fiction', explored the science behind the drug that has prompted questions, misunderstandings and myths.

Two leading experts in obesity research led the discussion: Maynooth University's Dr Andrew Hogan, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Biology, who is Principal Investigator with the Obesity Immunology Research Group, and Prof Donal O'Shea, Consultant Endocrinologist with the Obesity Immunology Research Group at St Vincent's University Hospital.

Hosted in The Phoenix building on North Campus and attended by a capacity audience, the panel explored the science behind Ozempic, including how it works and its impact on health. Discussing the latest research, they detailed how these medications have changed the treatment of obesity, and also answered controversial issues such as whether Ozempic causes muscle loss, increases fertility, and whether 'Ozempic face' is real. They also participated in a lively audience Q&A, fielding questions across a range of related issues.

Hosted by the Development and Alumni Relations Office, in collaboration with the Faculty of Science and Engineering, this event, which was also on livestream, offered an opportunity to gain expert insights, and to separate fact from fiction on one of today's most talked-about medications.
