Orange County and LYNX Expand Bus Network to Improve Connectivity and Better Serve Passengers

Getting around O-town just got a little easier. LYNX has increased its bus frequency, added weekend routes, and created adjustments to improve commutes and offer more choices for both tourists and locals in Orange County. All thanks to Orange County's $100 million Accelerated Transportation Safety Program (ATSP).

LYNX's new and revamped routes boost connectivity across various communities and key destinations, including the new 311 express route linking Orlando International Airport to Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort.

James Boyle, Interim Chief Planning & Development Officer for LYNX, said they reviewed ridership numbers and listened to customer feedback to shape the needed changes.

"Customers will now see buses come more frequently, and see bumped-up service on the weekends," he said. "The improvements will impact those going to work, doctor appointments or shopping."

With 50 percent of LYNX riders working in the service industry, increasing weekend frequency was an easy decision. Initial feedback has been positive.

Hospitality worker Adam H. said the increased frequency on Link 40 has been a game-changer. He switched from driving to work to using bus transit to save time and money.

"I noticed the line runs more frequently now," he said. "I like it because the schedule is always on time. It's very consistent."

Orange County resident Cathy Martino, a daily LYNX rider, said the new bus routes are phenomenal.

"It will very much improve my quality of life because now I don't have to wait an hour for a bus," she said. "My travel time was cut in half, going back and forth."

LYNX's share of ATSP was $45 million to make the dramatic improvements to its routes.

In addition to transit funding, ATSP monies will go to more lighting and sidewalks as well as pedestrian, bicycle and motorist safety.

• Link 21 - This Raleigh/Kirkman/Universal Studios Sunday service increased to every 30 minutes.
• Link 37 - This Pine Hills/MetroWest/Kirkman/Valencia/Universal/Tangelo Park/South Park Walmart/Florida Mall weekday peak service increased to every 20 minutes in each direction; Sunday service increased to every 30 minutes.
• Link 40 - Weekday service increased to every 30 minutes for this Americana Blvd/Universal Studios route.
• Link 42 - Sunday service increased to every 30 minutes for this I-Drive/Oak Ridge/Orlando International Airport route.
• Link 311 - This new service from OIA Terminal A to Disney Springs Transfer Center will operate every 30 minutes daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. It also stops at the Sand Lake Road SunRail station, Florida Mall SuperStop, Universal Blvd., International Drive and Destination Parkway SuperStop.
• Link 436S - Sunday service for the 436/Fernwood/OIA route increased to every 30 minutes within Orange County.

In the coming months look for upgrades to the LYNX Central Station, the addition of some 200 new bus shelters in all six districts, and other enhanced services, Boyle said.
